Sports Nutrition Support
Personalized nutrition strategies to help you train, compete, and recover.
Hey, athlete.
Maybe you’re still competing. Maybe you lift or ride before work. Or maybe your “training” looks more like chasing your kids around and trying to keep up with life.
If you want a sports nutritionist who gets training, recovery, and real life, you’re in the right place.
You might be:
-
Under-fueling and wondering why you crash midweek
-
Struggling with body changes or injury after leaving competitive sports
-
Unsure how to eat for performance without slipping into old habits
-
Frustrated by mixed messages about carbs, protein, or what “healthy” even means
-
Training for an endurance race or event and want to dial in fueling and hydration, without guesswork
I help active adults and former athletes fuel for strength, endurance, and recovery without extremes. Together, we’ll build a plan that helps you perform better, prevent injuries, and feel more like yourself again.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF:
Workouts leave you sore, injured, or depleted, even though you “eat well”
You are worried about overuse injuries, poor recovery, or feeling flat & low energy
You still track macros & calories or lean too heavily on restrictive fueling for performance
Your nutrition advice feels binary: “eat less” vs “diet hardcore”
You want to eat in a way that supports what you do, not something that adds more pressure
You have a race, climb, paddle, or multi-day event ahead… and want your nutrition to keep up with your effort.
What if eating for performance actually made you feel good again?
1:1 Sports Nutrition Support
Let’s build a fueling strategy that works with your goals, not against your body. Here’s what our work together might include:
Step 1: Assess
We start with where you are.
- Review your current training load, goals, energy levels, and recovery patterns
- Identify areas of under-fueling, low energy availability, or mismatch between intake and output
- Discuss labs (if available), injuries, appetite changes, or red flags like low libido or irregular cycles
- For endurance athletes, we’ll also explore your hydration strategy, electrolyte needs, and on-course fueling options for long-duration events.
Step 2: Align
We create a realistic fueling plan (not a rigid set of rules).
- Adjust your intake to match training, recovery, and life stress
- Learn how to actually apply the Athlete’s Plate across light, moderate, or heavy days
- Build meals and snacks that support muscle repair, energy, and hormone health
- Design pre-, during-, and post-training fueling protocols so you can sustain energy, avoid “bonks,” and recover faster (whether your race lasts 45 minutes or 48 hours).
- Dial in electrolyte balance and hydration for your unique sweat rate and conditions.
You’ll understand what to eat, when, and why in a way that makes sense for your sport, body, and schedule.
Step 3: Adapt
As life shifts, your plan shifts with it.
- Modify intake around travel, race days, injury, or return to sport
- Create a “race-week” plan, including pre-event meals, on-course fueling packs, and post-event recovery nutrition.
- Incorporate gentle nutrition tools without tracking every bite
- Learn how to spot when you’re under-fueled (before you crash)

What success looks like.
When this work clicks, here’s what many of my clients report:

More energy in training, fewer injuries or “nagging aches”

Actually enjoying fueling again + not resenting what you eat

Bouncing back from workouts faster, with less soreness

A more sustainable nutrition relationship: exercise and food as power, not punishment

Improvement in other body metrics (e.g., strength, endurance, PRs), not just the scale or aesthetic goals

Let’s zero in…
In our work, I may look at:
- Training schedules and intensity
- Energy availability and timing
- Injury history and inflammation markers
- Recovery patterns, sleep, and muscle soreness
- Lab markers (if available): iron status, Vitamin D, glucose, cholesterol, etc.
-
Hydration status, sweat losses, and electrolyte needs for endurance athletes
-
GI comfort and gut training strategies for fueling during long events
Nutrition isn’t just what’s on your plate: it’s how your whole system is performing. And I want to see you fully fueled and firing on all cylinders.
Why work with me
Because I know what it’s like to want performance and balance at the same time.
As a former (and still very active) athlete, I’ve lived both the highs of chasing big goals… and the lows of burnout, overtraining, and restrictive eating masked as “discipline.”
As a kid, I was a gymnast – in the 80s and 90s. No pain, no gain. Say no more 🙂
Then in college, I played D3 field hockey and lacrosse, I also ran track, joined the ski team, played rugby for a short time, and even dabbled in powerlifting. Eventually, I sustained an injury during marathon training that was directly tied to poor nutrition.
That experience changed everything, and ultimately led me to pursue my Master’s in Nutrition & Exercise Science.
Since 2009, I’ve helped athletes, weekend warriors, and high-performing professionals reconnect with the part of themselves that once felt strong, capable, and confident. I’ve worked with collegiate athletes, runners, triathletes, paddlers, climbers, and adventure racers who need real-world fueling plans that work under pressure.
These days, I’m a happy athlete: skiing in the winter, riding my Peloton during the workweek, lifting weights, hiking, and yes, running after my kids, too.
I’ll help you meet your body where it’s at and teach you how to fuel your sport without wrecking your relationship with food.
Because your health shouldn’t require perfection. And neither should your sport.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“I didn’t realize how much I was under-fueling.”
— Casey R., 38, recreational triathlete & tech project manager
“I came to Marissa burned out, juggling triathlon training with long work hours, and constantly second-guessing how much I should be eating. I didn’t realize how much I was under-fueling until I started working with her. Now I have a sustainable plan that fits my training blocks and work schedule, and I haven’t been injured in months. More energy, better sleep, stronger lifts, and for the first time, food isn’t the stressor.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“I no longer feel like a couch potato.”
— Danny T., 41, strength-focused athlete & busy dad
“As a former D1 swimmer, I always thought I knew how to eat well, but after years of injuries and gaining weight fast, I knew I needed help. Marissa is cool like a coach. She gave me a way to manage food that didn’t require calorie counting. I no longer feel like a couch potato and feel smarter about what is going into my body and why.”

FAQ
Still have questions? Explore the FAQ below or reach out and let’s chat!
Do I have to be an elite or competitive athlete to work with you?
No, I work with all kinds of active adults. If performance, recovery, or injury prevention matter to you, you’re in the right place.
What’s different about your approach compared to other sports nutritionists?
Many sports nutrition programs focus on rigid plans or strict macro tracking. I take a more personalized and flexible approach. We’ll still talk about carbs, protein, hydration, and recovery, but in a way that respects your body, honors your life, and doesn’t require obsession. I’ll help you get results without the extremes.
Can you help if I have RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport)?
Yes. Many of my adult clients come to me unsure why they’re constantly tired, getting injured, or stuck in performance plateaus.
We’ll assess your current fueling strategies, training demands, and symptoms, and build a plan that supports performance and long-term health.
Please know my adult eating disorder track might be more suitable for you.
What if I’m trying to “get back in shape” after time off or an injury?
That’s a perfect time to work together. I help adults match nutrition to their current training level, not some idealized past version of it. No matter where you are at, I’ll help you fuel for where you are now while keeping your long-term goals in sight.
Do I need to track calories or macros to work with you?
Not at all. Some clients find limited tracking helpful for awareness; others find it triggering or exhausting. I’ll meet you where you are. Most of my work focuses on visual tools, performance cues, and flexible frameworks.
Do you also work with teen or child athletes?
Yes! I have a whole approach designed specifically for growing athletes and their families. If you are looking for support for a younger athlete, check out my Pediatric Nutrition page
Do you take insurance for sports nutrition support?
Yes, I’m in-network with several major insurers, and many sports-related concerns (like injury prevention, GI issues, fatigue, or disordered eating patterns) are covered. If you’re unsure, feel free to check my insurance and fees page and we’ll help verify your benefits.
I’m concerned about weight, can you help with this?
Yes. Your weight concerns will never be dismissed here. You can absolutely care about your health, performance, and body composition without returning to restrictive or disordered eating.
My approach is built around performance nutrition and metabolic health that’s sustainable, body-respecting, and mentally supportive. We focus on meaningful behaviors (e.g., like consistent fueling, strength, energy levels, and recovery) not just the number on the scale.
If weight is still something you’re tracking or thinking about, we’ll make space for that conversation while helping you widen the lens. Together, we’ll measure progress by how you feel and function, not just what you weigh.
Can you help with GI issues during workouts or races?
Yes, this is a common reason active adults seek sports nutrition help. We’ll troubleshoot fueling timing, hydration, fiber/fat intake, supplements, and even nerves to create a gut-friendly plan that supports your training without the discomfort.
